Presidents Message

Welcome to Cristo Rey High School

Welcome to Cristo Rey High School,

The School that Works opened its fourth year in Sacramento on August 17 by welcoming a study body of 285 enthusiastic students. This is a banner year for our school as we celebrate several significant "firsts."

  • First year with four classes of students (grades 9-12).
  • First graduation of a senior class in June 2010 and induction into the Alumni Association.

We have so much to look forward to and yet so much has been accomplished to position us for this year. Our Admissions team did a wonderful job recruiting new students and we are pleased to welcome a freshman class of 95 students. All of these students participated in our first Summer Bridge program (three weeks of enrichment in math, English, computers and study skills.) Our goal was to help students transition more easily to the rigorous college-preparatory curriculum they will encounter at Cristo Rey High School and we believe we have done just that!

Our Summer Institute program provided new and transfer students training for placement by CRHS Work-Study. Inc. in entry-level clerical jobs. We focused this year on specific skills such as phone etiquette and keyboarding as well as important "soft skills" like greeting others with a firm handshake and good eye contact. In partnership with Junior Achievement, our students were introduced to Seven Habits of Highly Successful Teens, a popular book which encourages time management, goal setting and leadership. Our student workers also received valuable training on appropriate usage of the Internet and harassment in the workplace.

Our students are well prepared for this academic year and all have said "yes" to make the most of their Cristo Rey experience. Our expectations are high for them but they have embraced the extended academic day and the professional dress code for school and work. Our dedicated faculty and staff are standing ready to develop special rapport with each and every one of our students. I am sure you join me in wishing our Cristo Rey Saints great success. Please check back frequently to our website as I will be reporting their progress throughout the year.

Sincerely,

Ward W. Fansler
President
